SINGAPORE — More than 300 participants from healthcare, logistics, infrastructure, energy, pharmaceuticals, academia and government sectors came together for the Sustainability Nexus Forum 2026, the first cross-industry sustainability forum organised by Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) and Jurong Community Hospital (JCH).

The Forum provides a platform for organisations across different sectors to share practical experiences and explore opportunities to work together on climate action and sustainable transformation. NTFGH and JCH are part of the National University Health System (NUHS).

Graced by Guest-of-Honour Dr Janil Puthucheary, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment and Senior Minister of State for Education, the Forum reflects the growing focus on climate adaptation in Singapore.

With the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment designating 2026 as the Year of Climate Adaptation, the national initiative underscores the importance of collaboration across government, businesses and communities to strengthen resilience against the impacts of climate change. The Forum also welcomed international participants who joined virtually, facilitating knowledge exchange and collaboration across borders.

Building Partnerships for Climate Action

Under the theme “Building Partnerships for Climate Action and Sustainable Transformation”, the Forum brings together leaders from JTC Corporation, PSA International, SP Group, Zuellig Pharma and NUHS to share practical experiences and lessons from their sustainability efforts.

Highlighting the importance of cross-sector collaboration, Associate Professor Dan Yock Young, Deputy Chief Executive, NUHS, and Chief Executive Officer, NTFGH & JCH, said: “No organisation can address these challenges alone. By bringing together leaders from different sectors, we hope to share practical experiences, learn from one another and identify opportunities to work together on solutions that can strengthen sustainability and resilience.”

Discussions at the Forum covered areas including energy efficiency and decarbonisation, climate resilience, sustainable infrastructure, circular resource management, digital transformation and sustainable supply chains.

NTFGH and JCH Earn Singapore's Highest Green Building Distinction

A key milestone highlighted at the Forum is NTFGH’s and JCH’s recent achievement of the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark 2021 In Operation – Platinum Super Low Energy certification, a top-tier sustainability certification that recognises strong energy performance and sustainable building operations. Achieved across both hospitals in July 2026, it makes NTFGH and JCH the first integrated healthcare campus in Singapore to attain this distinction.

The certification recognises the campus for achieving at least a 60 per cent improvement in energy efficiency compared to the national baseline. Building on this milestone, NUHS plans to extend Green Mark certification efforts across National University Hospital and Alexandra Hospital to further advance sustainable healthcare infrastructure.

Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Healthcare

Sustainability and infrastructure optimisation initiatives have improved operational efficiency, reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions, and strengthened resilience against rising energy costs.

The Forum highlights several initiatives across NTFGH, JCH and NUHS that integrate sustainability into healthcare operations while maintaining high standards of patient care.

• MRI Repurposing Initiative: In line with circular economy principles, NTFGH and JCH upgraded and repurposed existing MRI scanners, extending their lifespan while delivering faster scans, improved image quality and higher patient throughput. The initiative reduced electronic waste and maximised the value of healthcare resources.
• Waterless Adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Initiative: Singapore's first Waterless Adult ICU supports point-of-care hand hygiene while reducing water and energy consumption, wastewater generation and carbon emissions. Implemented across more than 40 ICU rooms, the initiative demonstrates how sustainability and infection prevention can go hand in hand.
• Smart Privacy Glass Project: Traditional curtains in ICU and isolation rooms have been replaced with Smart Privacy Glass, improving infection prevention and patient privacy while reducing water use, waste generation and chemical consumption associated with curtain cleaning and replacement.
• LED Lighting Optimisation Programme: The large-scale replacement of conventional lighting with energy-efficient LED fittings has reduced electricity consumption and carbon emissions, while extending lighting lifespan, reducing electrical waste and lowering maintenance requirements across NUHS facilities.

Underscoring the operational strategy behind these initiatives, Mr Ng Kian Swan, Chief Operating Officer, Group Facilities Management, Group Security & Group Emergency Planning, NUHS, and Chief Sustainability Officer, NTFGH and JCH, stated: “Sustainability challenges do not respect organisational or industry boundaries, and neither should the solutions. Through knowledge sharing, innovation and cross-sector collaboration, we can leverage our collective expertise to accelerate climate action, strengthen resilience and create lasting value for our communities.”
